Hofburg palace

The former residence of the Habsburgs

Vienna's Hofburg | Attractions in Vienna

Vienna's Hofburg palace served as the royal and imperial residence of the Habsburgs for many centuries, before it became the official seat of Austria's Federal Presidents in 1945.

In the different sections of the building, which emerged over a period of 700 years, you will find several museums, the Austrian National Library, and the Bundesdenkmalamt (Austrian Federal Monuments Office). The Hofburg congress and events center, established in 1958, is the venue for concerts, balls, and receptions throughout the year.

Visitors can see the imperial apartments on tours through the Hofburg. The silver collection, the treasure collection, the Empress Sisi Museum, and the Albertina are among the most popular tourist magnets.

Leopold VI is said to have laid the foundation for the first castle in the 12th century. The castle was first mentioned in historical documentation in 1279 during the reign of Emperor Rudolf I. In the 16th century, Emperor Ferdinand I relocated the imperial residence to Vienna and began the expansion of the Hofburg, which was further enlarged in the following centuries.
