The Museum of Art History in Vienna

Museum of Art History | Attractions in Vienna

One of the most beautiful and most significant cultural institutions in Vienna is the Museum of Art History near the Hofburg. Here, you will find not only the world's largest Bruegel collection but also many other works such as Raffael's "Madonna of the Meadow" or Vermeer's "The Art of Painting". Other masterpieces by Rubens, Velazquez, Dürer, Tintoretto, and Tizian are housed in the painting gallery of the museum.

First built for the art treasures of the Habsburg royal family, the Museum of Art History in Vienna has always been accessible to the public since its opening in 1891.

Not only is the art collection of the museum impressive but so is the marvelous building, which was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The richly decorated Cupola Hall and the frescoes as well as mural-adorned grand staircase are architectural treasures from the 19th century. The Museum of Art History and its sister building, where the Museum of Natural History is located, belong to an enclosed ensemble around the Maria-Theresien-Platz - part of the World Cultural Heritage-listed "Historic Center of Vienna".
